Day Fifteen. Friday, October 20th. 2324hrs.

Doug worked outside beneath a canopy of construction lights. He seeded the soil he had leveled to grow his lawn, transplanting shrubs and trees from pots to holes he dug. Clouds blotted the late-night sky, dark and heavy, and an occasional pattering of rain sprinkled to the ground. The weather report foretold an incoming storm, one that would wash the Sacramento region for the better part of a week.

Despite the chilly night, moist air, and the cool breeze, Doug paused his toiling to wipe sweat from his brow. As he stared across the dark horizon, a piercing, glass-shattering scream ruptured from inside the house.

For a few seconds, he remained frozen as his mind processed the sudden screech. Then he burst across the yard, through the front door, up the stairs, and into Emily’s bedroom.

After their picture-perfect day—the sunny break from the storm ravaging their lives—Emily fell into a near-catatonic state. She was, or Kathleen surmised, worn from the exerted energy of the day before. Emily had gone to bed early, had slept all morning into the early afternoon.

Cue the blood-curdling scream.

Kathleen beat Doug to her daughter’s bedroom. Doug fell in behind her. His eyes prodded around the room; his heart crashed in his chest. He suspected the worst.

Emily sat in bed. She covered her mouth with both hands; her eyes were hooked wide open with fear.

Kathleen nearly tackled her daughter. “Baby, what happened? Are you okay?” She held Emily, brushing her knotted hair with her fingers.

Doug ran in the opposite direction as the bed, moving toward the closet, throwing open the door to check for threats.

What kind of threat? A ghost? A monster?

Nothing beyond clothes and shoes hid in the small, dark space.

Doug returned his attention to Emily and Kathleen. “What happened?”

“Frank.” Emily gasped out the dog’s name. Tears filled her eyes and slipped down her cheeks.

“What about Frank?”

“He’s gone.”

“Gone where?”

“I don’t know!”

“Baby, what happened?” Kathleen asked, stroking her daughter’s hair. “Can you tell me what happened?”

Doug cracked his knuckles, feeling helpless and not knowing what to do. He combed his fingers through his unkempt hair, which had grown more unruly by the day since moving into the house. “Where’s Frank now?” He tried to keep his voice steady, but the question boomed off his lips.

“He took him,” Emily said.

“Who took him?”

“The man without a face.”

The entity with a skull for a head crossed Doug’s mind. “Who?”

“Vernon Nowak,” Emily said. “That is what he says his name is. Vernon Nowak.”

“You’ve seen him before?” Doug asked. “You didn’t tell us?”

“He… he sometimes comes into my room at night when I’m sleeping.”

“What?” Kathleen said. “He does what? Doug, call the police.”

Doug remained rooted in the middle of the room.

“I thought he was fake, like an extension of a dream, but he just came in here.” Emily spoke fast. “Frank growled, but Vernon hit him.”

“Hit him?” Doug asked, growing more confused with each passing word.

Frank weighed over a hundred-fifty pounds. Who would hit a dog that large?

What would hit a dog that large?

“Frank went quiet,” Emily said.
